Birchbox Hits and Misses

Who loves a Birchbox post? I do! Sorry to any of you who are less than enthused when it comes to reading about beauty products - you can feel free to skip today. I still love you.

I've been a Birchbox subscriber for a year now, having received my 12th box in October. Looking back, I've been really pleased with what I've gotten out of my subscription and have discovered some excellent products, as well as some duds. Let's look back at the highs and lows of my 12 boxes.

But! Before we do that, there were three months that were never reviewed because I got the boxes before I started blogging about them again in February. So let's do a quick catch-up first.

November 2011:
My first box contained this Zoya nail polish in Noel and as well as two samples of Thymes Body Lotion - one in Kimono Rose, that I loved, and one in Eucalyptus (pictured) that I didn't love as much...probably why I still haven't used it up.

Not pictured are the small tube of Jouer Lip Enhancer which didn't really do much for me, a silver twistband which...bleh, and a vial of Kate Spade Twirl - a perfume that smelled like something I would have worn in junior high. It was a fairly good box to start with. Left me excited to see what would come next!

December 2011:
What did come next was a packed box with the below included.

A small bottle of NUXE Huile Prodigieuse OR Multi-Usage Dry Oil Shimmer, which is super fun to use on special evenings. I like to dab a little on my collarbone and on my cheek bones. Showstoppers Designer Fashion Tape, which would be perfect for when I wear a button-down shirt, except I don't have any because they never fit me. So...still haven't found a use for those yet, but I'm glad I have them just in case. A packet of EBOOST Orange Natural Energy Booster that's been in my silverware drawer for almost a year. I mixed up a glass....

Tastes like vitamin-y orange pop...so...not awesome.
Not pictured are a cute little pink Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss that was just the perfect shade and consistency, Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Dry Shampoo which I used up fast, and a sample of Atelier Cologne Ambre Nue Petite Cologne Absolue which was pretty good - nothing too amazing, but it smelled good.

January 2012:
This box contained my first full-size product! A Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner in Peacock. It's way fun to wear when I want a little something brighter than brown, black or dark purple - it's like a party for my eyelids. I particularly love it with gold shadow.

Also pictured are a sample of Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash which I've tried before. It's lovely. And a sample of VMV Hypoallergenics Re-Everything Lotion. This is not so great. It smells funny and  has a consistency of overcooked oatmeal. It's supposed to exfoliate and moisturize, but I use it very rarely.

Not pictured are a mini LARABAR which was kind of weird to find in a box of beauty products, and a sample of Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy perfume that was amazing! I loved the smell and even received complements from guys more than once on how I smelled good. Sounds like a winner to me!

Awesome. Ok! Birchbox Top 5!
1) Miss Jessie's Curl Cream, March 2012 (This is, so far, the only thing I've ordered from Birchbox in a full size. I really do love it better than anything else out there for when I'm air-drying my waves.)
2) Color Club nail polish in Jackie Oh!, March 2012
3) Stila One Step Bronze, June 2012
4) WEI-to-go Ideal Skin Perfect Finish, September 2012
5) Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator, September 2012
Honorable mention: Thymes Kimono Rose lotion (November 2011, see above), Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy perfume (January 2012, see above), amika: Obliphica Nourishing Hair Mask (April 2012), Arquiste L'Etrog perfume (May 2012) and both Harvey Prince perfumes (July 2012 and October 2012)

And Birchbox Bottom 5
1) The THREE twistband products, November 2011 (see above), May 2012September 2012
2) Kate Spade Twirl, November 2011 (see above)
3) Eye Rock Designer Liner stickers, February 2012
4) Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy La Fleur perfume, August 2012
5) FusionBeauty LashFusion XL Mascara, August 2012

Basically, there were many more hits than misses - it was difficult to choose just five! And there were plenty of products that I tried that didn't wow me or make me say "Ummm...wtf?" So, on to another year of Birchboxing!

If you get a Birchbox, what's the best thing you've received so far? The worst?

I love a Birchbox post! :) I'd say the best thing I've received is the Checks and Balances cleanser. I ended up buying the full size. Worst? TWISTBANDS!

Agreed. Twistbands are the worst.

I LOVE the concept of Twistbands. They are cute, feel nice and seem less harsh than normal holders. And are made in America. Too bad they stretch, fray at the ends and fall apart in as few as one wear and at most three or four wears. :( Boo. They had so much potential!

Also, any further thoughts on the One Love balm? I was intrigued by it when you wrote about it earlier this year - would you recommend? I like a fast, simple routine.

J, I really didn't get into the One Love balm. It was ok, but I think I'll stick to my mild Clinique soap and moisturizer routine because of the reliable results I get from it.
